Ceramics Inspired by Lake Superior
My Process
Sitting on my wheel, I see beautiful Lake Superior, the biggest lake in the world in front of my eyes. You can imagine what that does to the imagination – just imagine.
I see the waves crashing and dancing while I carve lines that mimic them. I feel the cool big lake air entering through the window, filling my lungs as my clay-covered hands move in rhythmic motion pulling the walls of the vessel towards the sky. The outside comes inside, as I create.
In my studio, I am amidst the beauty of my mismatched plywood walls and misaligned stacked cement bricks under the feet of my wheel. These are insignificant details when minds are processing how the outside is living inside of this vessel, your vessel.
I see the seasons entering and exiting, the color palette of the view ever-changing, and I witness the natural patterns of earth shifting. Never-ending inspiration unfolding before me.
Contentment saturates my existence as I express through clay moments in nature that have changed me. A healing I hope distills into my art as I contemplate this wonder-filled landscape, and how it all pertains to us, and this life we are living.
I aim to reflect in clay a compilation of experiences and memories in nature that have changed me. They are moments in time I believe we all have connections to, and a magnetic pull towards. The moon rising, a special mushroom spotted on trail, a stormy day on the lake, and the northern lights dancing above the Boreal Forest. Through the use of ceramic vessels, I hope to connect you to the nature inside of you, awakened to the magic that is in and around us – A sort of hope emanating!
